  1. A survey of nursing schools is conducted to determine the need for and feasibility of a particular diagnostic product.
  2. Content experts perform a literature search, using the most common nursing textbooks from programs nationwide. The literature is evaluated for specific nursing content.
  3. A diagnostic test outline is developed from the literature review, and objectives, purpose, and outcome criteria are clearly defined. The test outline is compared with the NCLEX test plan.
  4. The test outline is reviewed by ATI's advisory board and content experts and evaluated for accuracy, educational level, validity of material, objectives, and outcomes.
  5. Test items are chosen from an item pool or are written by a national group of nurse educators and clinicians experienced in item writing. Test items follow the outline, objectives, and outcomes and are screened for cultural, gender, racial, and religious biases.
  6. The completed test (an initial draft) is analyzed and submitted to the advisory board for input, review, editing, and evaluation.
  7. A reading level is conducted on the completed test.
  8. Revisions are made based on advisory board recommendations and the test is again compared with ATI's outline and the NCLEX test plan.
  9. After revisions are made, the test is resubmitted for the advisory board's final approval.
  10. Several schools of nursing nationwide are selected to provide the initial validation testing. Schools are chosen based on the educational level of the program, the diagnostic tool, the number of students enrolled, and the ability to meet the objectives and outcomes of the tool.
  11. Diagnostic statistical data is collected from the results of the students' responses and the test is re-evaluated based on these data.
  12. The diagnostic test is then administered to nursing students nationwide based on course content and educational level.
  13. Norms are established and reliability studies are performed as large numbers of students complete the test.
  14. Diagnostic tests are revised annually by the advisory board and content experts. Revisions are based on current nursing trends, the needs of the students and faculty, and statistical data collected during the year.
